Limited Hangout (4 stars)
That is the term for providing a portion of the truth to prevent the whole truth from coming out and that seems to be what this is. I don't know that Ross is doing this deliberately, but his worshipful attitude about the CIA was disturbing. The CIA is what keeps you from the "gulag"? What the hell did you think they did in Gulags...the exact same things described in this book. Only they don't speak Russian.
Also, I may be overly paranoid, given the nature of this material, but what the hell is that long series of letters and numbers on the first page? I thought perhaps it was some self-publishing tracking code, but it is right where the dedication would go. With all the talk of "codes" that trigger Manchurian Candidates, it was creepy.
If this book had an index it would be a lot more useful...lots of info but much of it simply thrown down in almost list format. Hard to follow at times.
Frightening and Informative! (5 stars)
From Project Paperclip and The Tuskegee Syphillis Study, to real life Manchurian Candidates, this book is a wealth of information. Just as interesting are the copies of actual government papers(in the back of this book) on the experiments done. I only wish that there could have been follow-up information on those poor children who were put through those horrible LSD/mind-control experiments. I wonder, what were the long-term effects of those experiments on those children? This book is a MUST READ!
A Clockwork Orange ... (5 stars)
Government efforts to control alleged "terrorists" with the use of psychological "techniques" constitute a threat to the civil liberties of all and a common form of torture -- whenever and wherever it occurs.
Nothing that can be alleged about a victim of such torture excuses its criminality.
These activities are excused or rationalized by participants on the ground that "it is for the victims' own good" -- but to define what is for the good of another is never for that other's own good nor can it ever be anything less than a heinous violation of that other's full autonomy. Defenses based on "all that might be learned" from such efforts are equally unsatisfactory.
A human being is a locus of rights of a deontological, inalienable and inviolable sort. This is true even of Charles Manson, let alone any other normally flawed person. To believe otherwise, is to become like Manson. Any "therapist" who lends him- or herself to the reduction of a fellow human being to an object, a mere thing, an instrument of purposes not that human being's own, has betrayed all therapeutic ethics.
Any "therapist" willing to serve as a torturer for any reason, has abandoned his or her ethics.
Thomas Szasz writes: "... only when people withdraw their faith in mental health and mental illness will they see fit to curb the powers of psychiatry, just as only when they withdrew their blind faith in God and the Devil did they see fit to curb the powers of [priests]."
