As a current student of Dr. Lazar, reading her book and discussing it thoroughly in class has really made me realize that I have many of the same prejudices as the students she discussed in this book. This is a book that describes the many experiences of growth and changing opinion of Dr. Lazar herself and her students, preservice teachers. It describes the prejudices the college students held about children in urban school settings and their capabilities. I, like the students in the book, am only months away from being certified by Pennsylvania as a teacher and Dr. Lazar makes it evident that we are not going to help students unless these prejudices are rid of. Much of the book discusses the college students' opinions of the caregivers of these poor, urban-schooled, children. She emphasizes that until the future teachers realize that the parents are not at fault for the literacy deficits many children in the urban schools have, we are contributing to the problem, not the solution.
